The world of hemp, from cultivation to processing in Umbria

On this tour you’ll discover the many different facets of a once-abandoned plant that has contributed extensively to our land, our traditions and our craftsmen. In many parts of our region, hemp has not only always found fertile ground in which to grow and flourish, but it has always been used by farmers and artisans for both textile and food purposes.

Several decades ago hemp’s fibre and flowers were abandoned due to the massive use of plastic to produce tools and fabrics and in the industrialization of the food industry. In recent years, however, as a result of renewed interest in a return to simplicity and genuine products, several associations and craft-based companies have developed that are slowly reviving the hemp plant and its processing. There are several uses, all strictly limited to artisanal production.

During this tour you will discover one of these uses, which was amongst the most common in the past: hemp paper. You’ll be able to watch the manufacturing process, from the processing of the plant’s stem to the creation of paper, and then make some sheets yourself.

At the end of the workshop we will take you to see the hemp crop accompanied by our expert staff who will be able to illustrate the various stages of cultivation and various uses so that you understand the immense potential of this plant, even in sectors you would never imagine.

The tour will end with a tasting of products made with hemp oil and hemp flour at a fascinating farm in the municipality of Bevagna.

You can enjoy this experience throughout the year but the herbs and flowers that you will find during the walk will change according to the seasons. In winter a smaller ‘harvest’ should be expected, but the meal/tasting will be equally delicious in every season.
