Etruscan Umbria – From Tenaglie to Orvieto

The sixth stage of this magnificent journey in search of the most characteristic Etruscan sites by bicycle will lead us to Orvieto which, with its Tempio del Belvedere, the necropolis of the Crocifisso, Pozzo della Cava and its various museums, is one of the main Etruscan cities in Italy. The route measures just 28 km and is almost completely flat, and given the elevation gain of just 250 metres, it can be considered easy. We will set off from the centre of Tenaglie and cycle down towards Baschi, reaching it at the end of the descent and then a slight uphill stretch covering around 10 km. We will continue towards Orvieto and, following the signs for Todi, we will press on towards the lake of Corbara and pass through the village of the same name after cycling through a picturesque landscape at the foot of the dam. Leaving the small village behind us, we will continue the tour on a secondary road that will take us to the only tough stretch on the route, although it’s not very demanding, a 1.5-km climb. We will then reach Orvieto after another 5 km of quiet flatlands, and crossing the bridge over the Paglia river, we will reach the historic centre with just a few kilometres pedalling uphill or by going to the funicular car park, near the bridge, and using this method of transport to go up to the city centre.

Recommended clothing

For this activity we recommend comfortable clothing that does not restrict your freedom of movement.
Bring a windcheater/anorak with you, even if the activity takes place in the summer months.
We recommend wearing the right footwear for the type of bike you are going to use.
We strongly recommend the use of a crash helmet suitable for biking.

A warm sweater, such as a technical sports shir, for sudden drops in temperature

Mechanical assistance for repairs in case of punctures, problems with brakes or other malfunctions that can be dealt with on the spot.
In most cases a car will be on hand to provide any complex assistance or to keep drinks and food chilled.
