Etruscan Umbria – From Corciano to the underground tomb of the Volumni family
The first stage of this journey will lead us to the discovery of some of the most important Etruscan remains in the area, such as the Necropolis of Strozzacapponi and the Hypogeum (underground burial chamber) of the Volumni, on a route with numerous ups and down that requires a minimum of physical fitness. However, if tackled at the right pace, almost anyone could take this tour. Departure is from the Antiquarium just outside the walls of Corciano. From here we will begin a steep descent which, following the signs for Magione first and then Perugia, will take us to the small town of Castelvieto. Here, cycling on undulating roads flanked by splendid cultivated fields, we will continue to Solomeo, pass it continuing towards Perugia and then find ourselves facing our first climb, the one that will lead us to San Mariano. From here we will reach the Necropolis of Strozzacapponi in a few kilometres further on then continue, taking on the most panoramic but difficult part of our route by climbing up the steep but short stretches that lead to Pila and San Martino in Colle. From here, in particular, we will be able to enjoy a jaw-dropping panorama of Deruta, Torgiano, Assisi and the rest of the valley. Our route will then continue downhill in the direction of San Martino in Campo and Perugia, where, once we are near Madonna del Piano, we will turn, following the signs for the Ipogeo di Volumni, which we will reach about 4 km later on roads with a bit of traffic.
