Trekking Sibillini: Following the track of the active fault
Along the fracture lines in the Sibillini Mountains, a naturalistic-geological route illustrating the consequences of a terrible earthquake.
The area of Valnerina, especially in the Sibillini Mountains, as well as being very well known for the beauty of its landscapes, for the authenticity of its people and for its magnificent local products, is unfortunately also sadly famous for being a very active earthquake zone. Several earthquakes have struck this area in recent years but you may recall the earthquake in August-September 2016. In addition to having profoundly damaged the architecture of numerous villages and left indelible scars in the psyche of the populations that inhabited them, it left visible wounds on these beautiful mountains, including a fault line on the south-western slope of the imposing Monte Vettore.
The good news is that the inhabitants of these areas are not new to these difficulties, nor are they new to having to fight and eke a living out of this land, and thus their strength and their resilience has brought about a speedy rebirth and praiseworthy efforts at reconstruction. The process is long and hard but no-one has ever thought of giving up!
On this tour we will accompany you along the fault line that opened up on Mount Vettore. You will not simply be immersed, but also feel the geological metamorphoses that have affected the whole mountain. Our guide will be happy to accompany you with an explanation of this phenomenon from a geological as well as a naturalistic point of view.
You’ll be able to see the effects of a devastating event, but also feel great joy in seeing landscapes of immense beauty and maybe even meeting the locals, whose kindness and resilience will calm your spirits and add further cheer to your day.
