Hiking Montone: the medieval period and lunar landscapes
A circular hiking on the hills of Montone, a stronghold of the medieval leader Braccio, immersed in lunar landscapes with an age-old history.
The excursion starts from the area at the foot of the village which is dotted with ancient churches. From there the route slowly climbs up via panoramic footpaths, surrounded by clayey limestone sculpted by water and wind. Flanked by beautiful views of the Valtiberina and the Apennines, we will proceed towards the majestic Rocca d’Aries and then towards the valley streams, finally ascending to Montone and walking through the streets of the village.
The itinerary is mostly along forest trails on natural soil surfaces, alternating from time to time with some portions on a gravelly cart track. The paths with a natural soil surface tend to become muddy in case of recent rain. There are also some uneven and slippery sections. Almost the entire route alternates in a balanced manner with various ups and downs with medium or medium-low slopes. There is a downhill stretch towards the end with a subsequent quite lengthy uphill portion, but with only a few steep slopes. Some sections are exposed to winds. There are no refreshment or drinking water supply points along the way. The hiking will end with a walk in the village of Montone and the chance to enjoy a coffee or other refreshments.
