The way of the Longobards

Along the valley on the trail of the Longobards, discovering the UNESCO World Heritage Sites

In 2011, UNESCO included a serial site called “The Longobards in Italy. The Places of Power (568-774 AD)” in its list of World Heritage Sites. It is a collection of Longobard monuments along the Italian peninsula, located mainly where the Longobards had created their Duchies.

There are seven attractions in Italy that are part of this site and two of them are in Umbria. One is the Basilica di San Salvatore di Spoleto, while the other is the temple of Clitunno in Pissignano, a hamlet of Campello sul Clitunno.

On this easy-going trek we will connect these two points and follow the trail of the Longobards in Umbria, starting from Spoleto, home of one of the most important duchies in Italy, up to Pissignano. The starting point is the ‘cimitero Monumentale di Spoleto’ (cemetery) and the Basilica we will visit stands inside the cemetery. We will then cross the whole city and walk alongside the Marroggia stream, following it along the whole valley until we reach the temple of Clitunno on a path with hardly any ups and downs. This makes the walk suitable for everyone, as long as you are able to walk for 15 kilometres.
