The Castle of Morcicchia

Our expert guide will captivate you with stories – and the history – of these places, while taking you from the ancient but perfectly-manicured village of Giano along this natural, unspoilt path. Not many people know of it and even a lot of Umbrians would be amazed if you told them about it. Our guide, of course, knows every nook and cranny and will be able to answer all your questions along the way.

The path, winding its way through olive groves and beautiful landscapes, will lead you to the mysterious Castello di Morcicchia. Possibly dating back to the 12^th century, it was probably a fiefdom within the territories known at that time as ‘Normannia’, that is, the territories on the slopes of the Martani mountains that passed from the Duchy of Spoleto to the Papal State.

The castle today is in ruins, but its two towers remain along with sections of the walls that protected the little village where the small church of S. Silvestro is still located. This fascinating relic of a bygone era is slowly interweaving itself with the natural landscape. This would be an ideal spot for your lunch break and for some relaxation before resuming your trek.
