The Apennines and the green hills of Gualdo Tadino

On the upper Apennines behind Assisi, with views stretching as far as the border

Our route starts at the foot of the Umbria-Marche Apennines and extends across the green hills between Gualdo Tadino and Assisi and, although it’s not an excessively long trip, it is classified as moderately difficult because of the tough ascents in the central stretch which require a good level of physical fitness and training. We will start our tour from the outskirts of Gualdo Tadino and reach the ancient Roman road SS3 Flaminia that cuts across Umbria up to the Scheggia pass. Continuing in the direction of Assisi we will reach the uphill climb at Voltole which continues for 9 km and which, in its initial stages, has a gradient of about 8 %. After a short stretch, the tough climb at Montemezzo will begin, continuing for 2 km and offering an extraordinary view of the valleys below. After going over the pass and after about another kilometre slightly uphill, we’ll begin the descent to Assisi, which, in the direction of Casa Castalda, becomes steep and winding. We will then follow the signs for Gualdo Tadino continuing to descend for another 3 km, also in part along a rather busy stretch of road, until we reach the town. Our guides will doubtless suggest a visit to the area of Valsorda, a landscape laced with ancient, restored paths that offers a unique spectacle in an unspoilt environment of rare beauty.
