Near one of the gates of the village, Porta Senese, you will be lucky enough to admire the Chiesa parrocchiale di Santa Maria Maddalena (parish church), which is both majestic and elegant. The building resembles a Greek temple externally and contains numerous works of art. There are also numerous amazing frescoes by Mariano Piervittori, a painting by a pupil of Perugino and some works painted by the Sienese school.
Among the most important monuments in the village is Palazzo Ducale della Corgna, and you’ll have the honour of walking exactly in the same places where prominent personalities such as Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolò Machiavelli strolled. Inside you’ll find numerous frescoes on the walls of the rooms, created by renowned artists such as Pomarancio, Pandolfi and Savini. Through a covered walkway you can reach the medieval fortress called Rocca Mediovale, also known as the Castello del Leone or Rocca del Leone. Expect to be entranced at the sight of the pentagonal walls and the five towers that make up the fortress, including the keep, measuring some 39 metres in height. From this position you can admire a splendid panorama that opens out onto Lake Trasimeno and you will perceive the grandeur of this site, which was the strategic surveillance point of Castiglione del Lago for centuries.
