From Trestina, cycling amongst woods, meadows and castles
Cycling through magnificent landscapes in search of hidden castles
This moderately-difficult tour goes through fascinating landscape on roads that are also largely free of traffic and run through dense forests, meadows and cultivated fields. Departure is from Trestina railway station, after which we will cross the beautiful rural landscape of the valley and head towards Lisciano Niccone. This small town nestled in the countryside hosts an interesting 10th-century castle, that of Lisciano, which overlooks the entire town from its hill. We will then continue on almost flat roads with not much traffic until, at about half-way through our route, we start a lovely – but in some stretches tough – climb that will also enable us to cross over into Tuscany. After the hairpin bends on our climb immersed in the greenery of the woods and lush pastures, we will face a rather challenging descent, due to the numerous bends and the partly uneven road surface. At the end, we will be able to enjoy a relaxing break in the hamlet of San Leo Bastia. We will set off again for Trestina, passing through winding country roads but, before returning to our starting point, we will tackle the last uphill stretch on our route, the one that leads to the sanctuary of Canoscio. At the end of this panoramic climb that is full of twists and turns and measures some 3km – but without steep slopes – a breath-taking panorama will open up over the entire Tiber valley. At this point we’ll tackle the hill from the opposite side, downhill towards Trestina where we will reach our starting point after just a few kilometres. Choose this itinerary if you love being surrounded by greenery, and our expert guides will accompany you and ensure your experience is even more intense by explaining all the different attractions in the area.
