From Spello to Assisi via the ancient ‘via degli ulivi’ trail
A route that’s suitable for everyone, in the lovely rolling hills between Spello and Assisi
Choose this enchanting tour to discover Assisi and Spello and their artistic and cultural treasures, but also the captivating landscapes between Monte Subasio and the Foligno plain. This route is certainly within everyone’s reach, even for less experienced enthusiasts due to the shortness and only slight increase in altitude. Departure is from the upper part of Spello, the ancient Roman colony that still preserves precious architectural remains of the time, such as the Amphitheatre and the thermal baths. Passing through Porta Montanara, we will leave the village behind us and soon find ourselves walking along one of the most inspiring stretches on the entire route, the Via degli Ulivi, a path that winds around the mountain halfway up and cuts through a splendid olive grove. Pressing on, we will approach Assisi and the Basilica di San Francesco (we can choose to see the highest part of the city by making a detour on route) and from there we will continue towards Rivotorto, passing the sanctuary that holds the ‘Sacro Tugurio’ (the sacred Franciscan hut containing the presumed remains of St Francis’ father, Pietro Bernardone). We will then head back towards Spello, but not before admiring Villa Fidelia. This beautiful 16th-century building, with a magnificent Italian garden, will be our last stop before returning to our starting point, the historic centre of Spello.
