Trekking of Gubbio, the aqueduct and the dinosaurs
A hike in the mountains around Gubbio with its archaeology, history, geology and landscapes
This circular route includes paths with panoramic views, ridges, unspoilt valleys and woods, rocky outcrops, monuments and medieval views. You’ll climb upwards from the town to the ridge of Monte d’Ansciano, with its boundless views over Gubbio’s plains and beyond. Going down towards the opposite valley you’ll reach Gola del Bottaccione, an extremely interesting site from a geological viewpoint. From there, we’ll follow the Medieval Aqueduct to return to the town. The final part of the walk will take in Gubbio’s most stunning sights and is an absolute must.
The circular route extends along paths in a wooded area and walkways of great historical interest, with a portion on upper hillside meadows and ridge paths. There is a long, initial uphill stretch. The surface of the path is in a sufficiently good state, with some slippery or uneven stretches and some rare muddy spots in the case of recent rain. There are some very panoramic viewing points and sections exposed to winds, but the path is wide and equipped with a railing as a result of recent work undertaken to open the route up for tourists and the general public. The excursion is generally fairly well exposed to the sun. There is only one refreshment point along the way and there are no sheltered areas in case of sudden rain.
