Choose to visit Bevagna and you’ll appreciate why this wonderful Umbrian village with a strongly medieval character that has been counted among the ‘Cento Borghi più belli d’Italia’ (One hundred most beautiful villages in Italy) and has won a ‘Bandiera Arancione’ (an‘Orange Flag’ attesting to excellence in tourism, hospitality and the environment). Discover the architectural works of ancient Mevania, famous for the event called ‘Il Mercato delle Gaite’ (a medieval re-enactment of life, food, trades etc in Mevania between 1250-1350), and stop to admire the many artworks created in Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque style, with a harmonious and perfect cohesion between the styles. You will find it wonderful to walk through the picturesque alleyways of the city, affording you splendid panoramic views. You will be accompanied on the tour by our expert guides.
Your tour will start from one of the ancient gates of the village, Porta Cannara, which will immediately project you into a dimension of a bygone past; a few steps away, in the upper part of the city and after a staircase, you will notice the Chiesa di San Francesco. While you’ll appreciate its simple exterior facade, the interior is even more impressive and refined and preserves some works of art by famous artists such as Dono Doni and Ascensidonio Spacca also called Il Fantino. Near the cardo maximus you will also admire some remains of ancient Roman Baths and you will be surprised by the wonderful mosaic paving depicting sea creatures.
The main square of the town, Piazza Silvestri, will give you a sense of balance between the buildings that represent religious and political power. Stop to contemplate the majestic Chiesa di S. Michele Archangelo, the evocative Chiesa di S. Silvestro, the characteristic Chiesa di S. Domenico e Giacomo and the imposing Palazzo dei Consoli.
Near Porta dei Molini, you can also admire the Lavatoio sul fiume Clitunno (outdoor washing trough), also known as Lavatoio dell’Accolta, and imagine distant times when women went there to toil over the regular chore of washing of clothes. To complete your tour, you can also admire the Chiesa di Sant’Agostino and its beautiful frescoes.
