A tough route from the Tiber Valley to Lake Trasimeno
Test your true grit on the hills that border Lake Trasimeno
This tough tour will start and finish in Umbertide and is a route that, in addition to being quiet from a traffic viewpoint, offers some of the most enchanting landscapes in all of Umbria. We will ride from the Tiber Valley to Lake Trasimeno on a route with numerous ups and downs but also quite challenging climbs, so this activity is not suitable for those who are not extremely physically fit. We will set off from Piazza Mazzini in the centre of Umbertide and head towards Castel Rigone taking the initial slopes on the most important climb on our route, the Colle Campana, an ascent that’s not too steep except in its final stretch. Once at the top of the hill, our reward will be the extraordinary panorama that ranges from the Umbria-Marche Apennines and Monte Tezio to Lake Trasimeno and Monte Amiata. Once the climb is over, we will tackle several kilometres of ups and downs that will lead us to the town of Castel Rigone where we will take a refreshing break and maybe visit the Santuario di Maria Santissima dei Miracoli, a 15th-century building attributed to one of Bramante’s pupils and considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Umbria. Our route will continue down a panoramic descent to the shores of Lake Trasimeno, where we will cycle along the lakefront to exactly where the Romans were severely defeated by Hannibal’s Carthaginians during the battle of Trasimeno in 290 BC. Once in Tuoro, we will leave the lake behind to begin climbing the Valico Gosparini pass, a beautiful 6-km climb that once completed will give us a magnificent view of Lake Trasimeno. We will continue downhill until we reach the Niccone valley where we will have the chance to stop to refresh ourselves at a small fountain near Niccone from which we’ll return to our starting point a few kilometres further on. However, if you still have enough energy, we advise you to extend the itinerary a bit and visit the medieval village of Montone, our expert guides will be happy to accompany you there too!
